About Prince’s Grant

Prince’s Grant Coastal Golf Estate, established in 1994, has matured into one of the most prestigious residential Estates in Kwa Zulu-Natal. Reclaimed from a sugar cane monoculture, it was replanted with over 100 000 indigenous trees and plants, to recreate the natural biodiversity of the area. This resulted in the Estate being recognized as a Site of Conservation Significance by the Kwa Zulu-Natal Ezemvelo Wildlife Department. The original vision of developer Guy Smith has blossomed into a spectacular reality for both residents and visitors.

The history of Prince’s Grant dates back to the 1800s.

Prince’s Grant has a rich history and fascinating pedigree. Prince’s Grant was previously a portion of the Hyde Park farm. The first owner was George Wilson Prince who acquired the property by Deed of Grant on 20 October 1856 from her Majesty Queen Victoria. The land acquired by Mr Prince was 3354 acres in size, according to the Deed of Grant and the price a handsome two pounds, five shillings and four pence sterling.

The farm was acquired by Babu Bodasing soon after the purchase. He was an indentured cane cutter from India. In his lifetime, Babu Bodasing managed to put together a portfolio of properties in Natal and Hyde Park that remained in Bodasing hands until the land on which Prince’s Grant is situated was sold to Prince’s Grant Property Share Block Limited by Raj Bodasing. The latter is still a shareholder and director of Prince’s Grant Holdings (Pty) Limited.

Certain of the features of the estate originate from the Babu Bodasing era. The 16th hole of the golf course is known as Paddyfield. This portion of land was where Babu Bodasing planted rice many years ago. The small house on the beach behind the fifteenth green was the first building on the property and has been retained in its original form. The house was the Bodasing family’s original beach cottage. Although it has been redesigned, the remaining foundations were originally built by the Bodasings seventy or eighty years ago.

The Golf Course

When the Prince’s Grant Estate development was designed, it differed from most golf course estates in that the golf course took precedence and was given priority when the land was laid out for its final uses. The care and priority given to the design of the course is evident when looking at the magnificent fifteenth hole which occupies prime real estate that in most developments would probably have been allocated to housing. Peter Matkovich has skillfully worked the land and today we have a course which works in harmony with the surrounding natural environment.

Construction of the golf course commenced in 1992 and it was opened for play in June 1994. The clubhouse was officially opened by Hugh Baiocchi, our first Director of Golf, in November 1994. The residential Estate now consists of over 450 houses and plots, spread over 4 ridge lines overlooking the Indian Ocean and the championship golf course. There is a common thread running through the architecture of each home designed to bring a village feel to the Estate.

The Estate is managed by the Homeowner’s Association. This body is responsible for the maintenance, development and finances of the Estate, as well as for the commercial operations. In recognition of the excellent job done by this body, Prince’s Grant Coastal Golf Estate was named Best Golf Development In Africa in 2011 by the World Property Awards.

Since opening in 1994, the Prince’s Grant golf course has earned a reputation for excellence. Prince’s Grant is a regular recipient of the Compleat Golfer 5-Star Golf Experience Award and has been named the Best Golf Development In South Africa by the World Property Awards.

The golf course has a links/parkland layout, designed and constructed by Peter Matkovich, and is laid out over four ridge lines overlooking the Indian Ocean. Sweeping, majestic views over the ocean, with spectacular coastal forest makes this one of the most scenic and visually stunning golf courses in South Africa. But it is the quality of the golf course design and the lovingly groomed condition of greens and fairways that make Prince’s Grant a bucket list golf course for golfers of all ability levels.

When all of this is paired with the mild KwaZulu-Natal climate that allows for year round golfing, you understand why Prince’s Grant is one of those golf courses where you sit with a cold beverage after the 18th, and you are already starting to plan how you will play the next round on this magnificent golf course.
